Helms Scholars Fund

Scott Helms ‘84 is a seasoned real estate professional with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. In 2016, Scott founded Helms Development to address the Florida industrial real estate market. In this role, he is responsible for shaping company vision and strategy, including overall command in the selection and development of land and vertical assets for the company. Prior to founding Helms Development, Scott was the Regional Managing Director for IOI Gazeley (formerly IOI) where he spent 27 years with the company in various roles and was one of the first employees to join the company upon its inception in 1989. Ten years after beginning his career with 1D1, Scott established an IOI Florida office where throughout the next 17 years, he developed over seven million square feet in South and Central Florida. As a testament to his commitment to the real estate profession, Scott is establishing the Helms Scholars Program to encourage College of Charleston students to major in real estate and explore the discipline’s numerous facets while creating valuable professional networks that will create employment opportunities after graduation. Scott hopes his commitment will inspire other alumni, corporate partners and friends of the College to make philanthropic investments in the real estate program that will increase the number of students majoring and minoring in real estate and help to elevate the program to one of the best undergraduate experiences in the country.
Scott graduated in 1984 with a BS in Business Administration from the College and earned an MBA in Finance from the University of South Carolina. A South Carolina native, Scott resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
