Inspiring Teachers Scholarship

To provide scholarships to minority students majoring in Teacher Education within the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance based on the following criteria:
Requirements:
Student demonstrates financial need
Student must maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher
Student has completed or is currently enrolled in the course: EDFS 201 Foundation in Education Preferences
Students who demonstrate the following attributes will be given preference:
Student is a resident of South Carolina
Student is African American or Hispanic

Steve Swanson co-founded Automated Trading Desk (ATD), a pioneer in high frequency trading in 1989. After twelve years of growing the company, Swanson was named President and CEO where he was responsible for increasing ATD’s market share to 7% of US daily equity trading volume. In 2007, ATD was sold to Citigroup for $680 million, where Swanson was global co-head of electronic trading for equities. Since leaving Fund Name: Inspiring Teachers Scholarship FE #: Page 2 of 4 Citi/ATD in 2010, he has managed, mentored, and invested in several startups in New York, Switzerland, and South Carolina. Swanson is a passionate volunteer for his alma mater, College of Charleston, having served in several roles. From 2003-2016, he served on the College’s Foundation Board as both a member and chairman and was recognized as emeritus status. Swanson served as co-chair of the College’s Boundless Campaign which successfully raised $139 million. Since 2018, Swanson has served on the College’s Board of Trustees. Swanson serves on the board of directors at Banks of South Carolina (NASDAQ: BKSC), AmplifiedAG, Engineered Marine Coatings, MedTrust, Quant Systems, Indexic, QuickSortRX, and Advisor.com. He also serves the philanthropic boards of Engaging Creative Minds and the Low Country Food Bank Foundation.

Emily Swanson graduated from the College of Charleston (’89) with a BS in Biology and worked for many years as an FDA Investigator. Emily currently serves as Board Chair for Reading Partners in South Carolina. She also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Aquarium (Executive Committee, Co-Chair of Education Committee and Co-Chair of Gala Committee) and the College of Charleston President’s Strategic Initiatives Committee. She has served on the Ashley Hall Board of Trustees and the Charleston State Company Board of Directors. Emily has been a tutor for Reading Partners for eight years and is passionate about literacy and education.
