Winthrop Endowed History Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to provide study abroad scholarships to history majors. Students who demonstrate scholarship in colonial history will be given preference.
John Winthrop established the Winthrop Roundtable in 1989 by hosting two dinners a year. As the Winthrop Roundtable grew, the venue changed to various restaurants around Charleston. The most significant change came when John followed the advice of Lt. Gen. George M. Seignious, former president of The Citadel, and merged the organization with the College of Charleston in 1996. The Friends of the Library at the College absorbed the Winthrop Roundtable as part of its yearly events in 2005. Past speakers include Secretary of State John Kerry; author George Plimpton, journalist Cokie Roberts, former N.J. Governor Tom Kean, and Senator Ernest F. Hollings. Following the 2016 Winthrop Roundtable, which features Dan Abrams speaking about the intersection of media and politics, the Friends of the Library will take full financial responsibility for the Winthrop Roundtable. Therefore, John Winthrop has requested that the funding remaining in the Roundtable Endowment be converted to a history study abroad endowed scholarship to benefit students majoring in history – a passion of Mr. Winthrop’s – to have study abroad experiences they may not otherwise be able to enjoy due to financial circumstances. John Winthrop is currently on the Board of Overseers of the Massachusetts Historical Society, an organization that may be used as a resource by the History Department.
