Remley Rivers Campbell '68 Endowed/Annual Scholarship
The Remley Rivers Campbell ‘68 Scholarship was established in his memory by his loving wife, Chris (Sarah) Christopher. Remley’s father died when he was but 7 years old, leaving his mother to raise four children alone. Remley’s older brother, Richard, worked his way through the College of Charleston and Remley was determined to do the same. The College was small and private at the time, with around 300 students. He graduated with a double major in chemisty and mathematics. Without personal financial resources, Remley worked at various jobs to put himself through school. One of his jobs was taking care of the College’s clay tennis courts behind what is now the Silcox Center. Remley was honored and very blessed to receive an Alumni Scholarship given to students who had demonstrated outstanding leadership on campus. He was one of the first students to receive this honor. While at the College, Remley was elected president of the Pi Kappa Phi pledge class. He was on the basketball team, belonged to the Student Athletic Association (served as president and vice president), played intramural sports, belonged to the Math Club, was a lab assistant in chemistry, and he was on the College’s newspaper and yearbook staffs. Remley lived away from Charleston for some years. When he came back, he became an energetic participant in College of Charleston activities. He was active in the Cougar Club and served on the board for eight years. He served for three years on the Alumni Association Board. He treasured his relationship with his fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Chapter, serving several years as chapter advisor, as well as area governor. He was actively involved in the process of putting together True Maroon, a book on the history of athletics at the College of Charleston. Remley believed in helping others in any way he could. Because he had the blessing of being helped to get an excellent education at the College, I know he would want to offer this opportunity to other students. With hope for their successes at the school and in life, and with confidence they will be leaders in whatever good things they do, this scholarship is offered.
