William and James Mulvaney Family Endowed/Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for a student who must be a declared education major with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains the aforementioned requirements. Preference will be given to a minority, male undergraduate majoring in middle school education; preference to a Charleston resident and preference to students with financial need.

Dr. William P. and James F. Mulvaney Family, from the Cincinnati, Ohio area believes in philanthropy and supporting education. They have established this fund in memory of Dr. William P. Mulvaney and to honor their family’s passion for supporting the teaching profession. As well, the Mulvaney Family has a deep appreciation for the College of Charleston, the School of Education, Health and Human Performance and the City of Charleston.

The Mulvaney Family’s relationship with the City of Charleston and the College of Charleston (CofC) began when James F. Mulvaney (son of William) and his wife Caroline S. Mulvaney (Carol) brought their son James “Patrick” Mulvaney to tour the College of Charleston as a prospective student. Patrick (CofC Class of 2010) majored in History and minored in Russian. After graduating Patrick taught English for several years in the Republic of Georgia and South Korea. Christine Marie Mulvaney, Patrick’s sister, was admitted to the College in 2012 and majored in Teacher Education Middle Grades, graduating in 2016. In choosing the teaching profession Christine followed in the footsteps of her mother, Carol, who has been a highly regarded, passionate teacher since 1991 in the Sycamore Community School System. Christine began her education career in 2016 in the same school system, teaching and supporting elementary students in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.

Being an educator, mentor and supporting education runs as a strong shared value and trait within the Mulvaney Family, beginning with Dr. William P. Mulvaney. In addition to sharing his knowledge and passion in the field of Urology, Dr. Mulvaney was recognized and respected internationally as a ground-breaking researcher, phenomenal teacher and highly regarded, compassionate urologist. His long and renowned career as an urologist included pioneering research and the design and development of equipment and procedures considered milestones in urology by the American Urological Society.

The Mulvaney Family is passionate about helping college-aged students enter the field of education. They have established this fund so that young adults can be supported in pursuing their field of interest, educating children and contributing to their communities by fulfilling this vital need in society.
