Shalosky Family Engineering Leadership Scholarship

The fund was established by Michael G. Shalosky to support engineering students with a demonstrated interest in and capacity for developing strong leadership skills. Mike named the fund for the Shalosky family, which includes his wife Susan of more than 40 years; their daughter Michael, a member of the MUSC Orthopedic trauma team; and their son William, a principal engineering consultant ÂT Kearney and member of the CofC Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.
Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, where he served in various leadership positions as a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He began his career at Allied Chemical Corporation in Columbia and joined Abbott Laboratories as a process engineer in 1980. Mike advanced through the corporate ranks to eventually serve as the director of the Abbott Global Engineering Division. He received the Abbott Presidential Award in 1987 and was the first engineering manager to receive the Abbott Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He is a past member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society of Plastic Engineers, the Association for Quality Participation, and Global Pharmaceuticals Operations Society. Mike retired after 27 years with Abbott Laboratories in May 2007.
It is Mike’s wish that the students who receive these scholarships exhibit exceptional leadership potential and have demonstrated experience with the following leadership attributes as outlined in the book The Powell Principles: identifying opportunities for partnership and collaboration; establishing trust; promoting teamwork and shared responsibilities; motivating others in and out of the classroom; and increasing morale. Scholarship recipients will be invited to participate in an annual leadership workshop and networking event with faculty and members of the CofC Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.
